Robert Holl was born in Rotterdam and completed his studies here with Jan Veth and David Hollestelle. 1971 won the 1. Prize at the International Singing Competition in s-Hertogenbosch. He then studied with Hans Hotter in Munich. 1972 won Robert Holl the 1. Prize at the ARD Competition in Munich. From 1973 to 1975 he was a member of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, then for a long time mainly worked as a concert singer and worked regularly with conductors such as Eugen Jochum, Karl Richter and Wolfgang Sawallisch.

For some time now he has been heard and heard again in opera productions: He was a guest at the Vienna State Opera, the Brussels Opera and since 1991 at the Zurich Opera House with roles such as Sprecher and Sarastro in "The Magic Flute" or Basilio in the "Barber of Seville "Under conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Franz Welser-Möst.

At the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin Robert Holl performed under Daniel Barenboim as Landgrave Hermann in "Tannhäuser", as Hans Sachs in "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg", as Daland in "Der Fliegende Holländer" and as Commander in "Don Giovanni". Also in the following seasons Robert Holl performed at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, at the Vienna State Opera and at the Hamburg State Opera with large parts of the Wagner subject such as Landgraf Hermann, Hans Sachs or King Marke. At the Vienna State Opera Robert Holl was in the seasons 2006 / 07 and 2007 / 08 as Pimen / BORIS GODUNOW (new production under Daniele Gatti in May 2007) to hear.

At the Bayreuth Festival Robert Holl was heard since 1996 as Hans Sachs in "The Meistersinger of Nuremberg" and was highly praised for his performance. In the summer of 2004 he played for the first time in Bayreuth the role of Gurnemanz in a new production of Wagner's "Parsifal" under the artistic direction of Pierre Boulez. Since 2008, Robert Holl sings the role of König Marke under the direction of Peter Schneider at the Bayreuth Festival. In addition to his involvement in various opera houses, Robert Holl has made a name for himself as a successful concert singer. He has sung in Europe, the USA and Japan among the most renowned conductors in Europe and the USA. Robert Holl is considered one of the great song singers of our time. His special preference is the German and the Russian song. He is associated with record label Preiser Records through a long collaboration with numerous song recordings. Lieder recitals regularly take the artist to international music centers.

Robert Holl himself composes songs and piano pieces, some of which were published by the renowned music publisher Doblinger and released on CD. In addition to his work as a singer, he regularly holds master classes. Robert Holl is also artistic director of "Schubertiaden" in Holland and Austria.

In October 1990 Robert Holl was awarded the Kammersänger title, in March 1997 he became honorary member of the Society of Music Friends in Vienna, in July 1997 honorary member of the festival "Carinthian summer". 1998, he was appointed full professor of song and oratorio at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.

2003 was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art 1st Class.
In March 2007 he received the Great Golden Medal of the Lower Austrian Provincial Government. In October 2007 Robert Holl was awarded in his hometown of Rotterdam, the highest Dutch civilian Order of Merit "Ridder in the Order of the Dutch Lion".

At the Bayreuth Festival 2011 and 2012 Robert Holl was heard again as King Marke. After the autumn tour 2013 to Japan and Russia with the Vienna Philharmonic under Christian Thielemann (IX Symphony by Beethoven), concerts in the Wiener Musikverein await: excerpts from Wagner's Meistersinger with the Wiener Symphoniker under the direction of Philippe Jordan and the Cycle "Poetry and Music" with four evenings in 2014.
